Hirosaki is a small town in the province of Aomori, in the northernmost tip of island of Honshu. It is one of the hot spots for the cherry blossom season, which is known in Japan as Hanami. The word literally means “flower viewing”, and is a celebration of life throughout Japan. Cherry blossoms have always been a present element in Japanese poetry and mythology, and are viewed as symbolic of the ephemeral nature of life. Every spring there are fairs and festivals (matsuri) to celebrate the coming of the blossoms.
